midway between Boulder and Longmont. The town was platted in 1875 two years after the Colorado
Central Railroad extended its tracks northeast from Boulder. This expansion provided a significant
boost to the local agricultural economy by
creating a link to markets as far away as Wyoming and Denver.
The name honored Chief Niwot,
chief of the friendly Southern Arapahoe Indian Tribe.
Their encampment was on Left Hand Creek about three miles west of Niwot
where Stone tepee groundings can still be found. Haystack mountain was a favorite lookout point
for buffalo that roamed in the Gunbarrel area. After the Sand Creek Massacre, the Arapahoe tribe
left the area and an era of cooperative living ended.
After the turn of the 20th century, the business district moved to Second Avenue, where it remains today. Old Town extends down Second Ave to Cottonwood Square built in the 1970s. The Niwot business area is filled with delightful shops and award-winning restaurants along the way. This charm, with a current population of 4,160, creates an enchanting small town oasis in Boulder County.
Niwot also offers many activities for everyone.
The Community School has classes and activities for children and adults.
A wide selection of organizations from Niwot Youth Sports to the Senior Citizen group are available.
Niwot has "Special Happenings" for all such as Thursday night bridge at the Grange Hall, babysitting co-ops and play groups, 4th of July Parade, Downtown Trick or Treating on Halloween, Holiday Tree Lighting Party and the Easter Egg Hunt. You are bound to bump into a friend or neighbor as socializing occurs at the local post office, restaurants, coffee houses, village market and at our many community events. Come join us where you can be a part of the community in your own individual way.

Niwot Nostalgia Days!
Click here for photos from 2006.
September 8, 2007Niwot Nostalgia Days is Niwot's town fair. It is a day when Niwotians get together to celebrate the little town they call home. Sometimes the day starts off with a fun run/walk followed by pancakes provided by Steele's Niwot Market. Then it's off to watch the parade, play games, pet the animals, bounce in a big bounce house, and visit the many craft and food booths as well as the wonderful historic quilt display at the Grange Hall. This year you could have your own quilt appraised by professional quilt appraiser, Jeananne Wright.Later that night the dancing begins. Many of the local food restaurants will be open to provide dinner to all. As soon as the band, starts to play, feet begin to tap. Dancing goes into the night, and thus ending Niwot Nostalgia days....until next year!!
